Affidavit written and sworn statement witnessed by a notary public or another official possessing the authority to administer oaths. Affidavits may be admitted into evidence. Contempt of court Any act involving disrespect to the court or failure to obey its rules or orders. Contempt of court carries a maximum of 30 days in jail. Directed verdict In civil cases in which there is insufficient basis for any other conclusion, the judge may direct the jury to render a specific verdict. Criminal defendants may also ask the court to rule in their favor rather than submitting the case to the jury. Probable cause A judicial finding that there exists reasonable grounds for belief that a person should be arrested or searched. Statute of limitations The judgment formally pronounced by the court upon the defendant after conviction in a criminal prosecution, imposing the punishment to be inflicted. Moot A moot point is one that need not be decided, due to a change of circumstances. Instruction A direction given by the judge to the jury concerning the law to be applied in the case. Rest 1) the person who is the subject of a petition, 2) the prevailing party in a court case against whom an appeal is taken.

	The mediation process may vary depending on the mediator. Generally, mediations commence with a general session with all parties, counsel and the mediator. At the general session, there will be a discussion of the case, the issues on appeal and other matters important to settlement. Then the mediator will meet separately with each party and their counsel in separate "caucuses." In these separate sessions, the mediator will seek to foster negotiations between the parties and develop agreement.
